From British Empire to Online Casino Empire?
19 Oct 2006

The time has long since passed when the age of the British Empire passed into the age of the British Commonwealth. But thanks to a little piece of U.S. legislation that effectively handed over the reins of a growing online casino industry to the United Kingdom, we could one day see the rise of a very different sort of British Empire, one based not on colonialism but rather on the business interests connected with the online casino industry. The Queen, or a future King, could in effect be the monarch of online casinos.

Given that the U.S. has taken on many a leadership role as other great powers have faded, it seems disconcerting to many that the U.S. would wash its hands of responsibility for an online casino industry its own technological prowess helped to bring about. But the U.S. government has other issues on its hands, such as elections, the war on terror, and illegal immigration. It is quite possible that the Congress passed a bill making online casino sites illegal in order to get someone else around the world busy with the task of making that industry seem respectable.

And if anyone has ever had the image of appearing respectable, it is the British. They had a knack for colonizing; now they might have the knack for online casinos diplomacy. What this event means for worldwide gamblers is that English will still be the predominant language of the online casino sites - only, it'll be a different kind of English from the American visitors to casino sites have gotten used to reading.
