Online Casino Gambling Study Requested
4 May 2006

The board of directors of one of the country's top casino lobbying groups has called for a year-long study into online casino gambling to be organized by a federal commission. The activity of the lobby group in Las Vegas could be a hindrance in the government's attempt to implement the online casino ban. The American Gaming Association said that they are still neutral on the online casino ban.

The American Gaming Association is a powerful lobby group and the law makers are aware that without their staunch support of the online casino ban, they will find it very hard to implement it in practice. Association President Frank Fahrenkopf estimated there will be between $12 billion and $15 billion spent on online casino gambling this year and that something needs to be done about this fact. The study needs to be performed in order to examine whether the online casino industry can be regulated seamlessly - can it block minors; can it control compulsive gamblers and can it keep organized crime elements out?

The Association hopes that by conducting the study about the online casino industry, it will provide some solid facts to the legislators regarding the regulation or deregulation of the industry. The online casino ban might be on hold, but it would make more sense to do it scientifically than not, the Association said.
